How to Install: iPhone Ringtone Setup / FAQ
Whether you downloaded a .m4r file directly to your device or saved it to your Mac or PC, follow these steps to set your new tone.
Method 1: GarageBand (No computer required)
After you download a .m4r file, you can use the free GarageBand app to set it as your ringtone directly on your iPhone. This is the most popular mobile method.
Before you begin: Ensure the GarageBand app is installed on your device.
Step 1. Locate your downloaded file
- Open «Safari» and download the .m4r file from our site.
- Tap the «Downloads» button (blue arrow) in the address bar.
- Tap the file to view it in the «Files» app and note its location.
Step 2. Import into GarageBand
- Open «GarageBand» and tap the «+ (Plus)» icon to create a new project.
- In the Tracks browser, swipe to find Audio Recorder and tap the Microphone icon.
- Tap the Tracks View button (brick wall icon) in the top-left to switch to the timeline.
- Tap the «Loop Browser» button (circle icon) in the top-right.
- Tap the «Files» tab, then tap «Browse items from the Files app».
- Locate your .m4r file. Touch and hold the file, then drag it to the left onto the timeline.
Step 3. Export and set the ringtone
- Tap the «Navigation» button (down arrow) in the top-left and select «My Songs».
- Touch and hold your project thumbnail, then tap «Share» and select «Ringtone».
- Name your sound and tap «Export».
- Once successful, tap «Use sound as...» and choose «Standard Ringtone», «Standard Text Tone», or «Assign to Contact».
Note: You can always manage your tones later in Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone.
Method 2: Mac (Finder)
For modern macOS versions, connect your iPhone to your Mac and sync your files instantly:
- Connect your iPhone to your Mac via USB cable.
- Open «Finder» and select your iPhone in the sidebar under «Locations».
- If prompted, tap «Trust» on your iPhone and enter your passcode.
- Locate your .m4r file on your Mac.
- Simply drag and drop the file onto the iPhone window in «Finder».
- The ringtone will sync automatically. Go to «Settings» > «Sounds & Haptics» > «Ringtone» to find it at the top of the list.
Method 3: Windows PC (Apple Devices or iTunes)
Using the official Apple apps for Windows 10 and 11:
- Open the «Apple Devices» app (or iTunes) and connect your iPhone.
- Click on your device in the sidebar and select the «Tones» section.
- Locate your .m4r file on your computer.
- Drag your .m4r file directly into the app window.
- The ringtone will sync instantly. You can now find it in your iPhone's «Sound settings».
Note: If you are using iTunes, ensure «Manually manage videos and songs» is checked in the Summary tab if the drag-and-drop doesn't work.
